Weak formulations (derivation, motivation for use, well-posedness)
Abstract introduction to the finite element method (FEM)
Theoretical analysis of FEM (e.g., of well-posedness, convergence)
Practical implementation of FEM (e.g., for linear/non-linear problems) in one and higher dimensions
Verification and validation of FEM
Toetsing
Course will be assessed based on assignments (40% of final grade) and a written exam (60% of final grade).
Note: Some of the assignments may require the students to study material not covered in class. Similarly, some assignments will ask the students to work on small extensions or generalisations of the concepts covered in class.
To pass the course, the following is mandatory:
* Assignments:
- The assignments (written and programming exercises) must be completed with an average grade greater than 5.5.
- The assignments will have deadlines and late submissions will be penalised.
* Exam:
- The written exam must be completed with a grade greater than 5.5.
Resit/ Repair opportunities:
In case of an insufficient result, repair opportunities may be offered in accordance with TER Implementation Regulations Art 5, sub 5., for:
- Group assignments: resubmit deliverable
- written exam: written resit
