Energy Storage
Beschrijving
Energy storage becomes increasingly important in society due to the introduction of increased shares of fluctuating renewable energy sources, like wind and solar energy. Moreover, a decreased dependency on fossil fuel resources is aimed at.
This course will introduce the students to the different strategies and systems of energy storage (mechanical, thermal, chemical), with an emphasis on large-scale storage systems for electricity.
The course includes the following lecturing elements:
Introduction: context of renewable power supply (current and future) and scope.
Mechanical storage systems (pumped hydro-electricity, compressed air energy storage, flywheels).
Electrical storage systems (supercapacitors, superconducting magnetic Energy Storage).
Electrochemical storage systems (batteries, flow batteries)
Chemical storage systems (hydrogen production and storage options, power-to-gas, power-to-liquids, carbon sources).
Carbon capture and storage/utilization.
Thermal storage systems (sensible heat, phase change materials, thermo-chemical), including geothermal storage systems.
