The Technical Medicine professional must be able to analyze and interpret measurements performed on the human body. The student is familiarized with system identification techniques to understand and interpret the meaning of measurements and their relevance in the diagnosis and monitoring of a patients treatment. The students learn parameter estimation techniques to model physiology and predict response to treatment.
System identification is an important tool to estimate the dynamics of a system using input and output data. It enables the characterization of physiological systems for various conditions in a standardized way, in order to gain more insight into this system.
During this course the mathematical background of system identification in both time domain and frequency domain is given, including closed-loop systems (i.e. systems under feedback). Furthermore, methods will be presented to translate the identified system dynamics into physical parameters using physical models (parameter estimation). During the course examples from both technical and physiological systems will be discussed.
