Beschrijving

In the BSc Clinical Technology all imaging modalities have been introduced in the module "Imaging bij grote ziektebeelden". In this course the physics, acquisition techniques and signal processing underlying ultrasound imaging, X-ray imaging, Computed Tomography (CT), and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) will be explored. Furthermore, the application of these imaging techniques in biomedical research and clinical practice will be discussed.

The following topics per imaging modality will be covered:

Ultrasound imaging

  • Physical and mathematical principles of ultrasound imaging

  • US probe design and advanced US imaging techniques such as harmonic imaging and non-linear reconstruction techniques for imaging tissue properties.

X-ray imaging and CT

  • Basic physical principles of X-ray image formation and tissue interaction

  • Basic principles of planar X-ray imaging and scintigraphy (short)

  • Advanced methods for image acquisition using CT

  • Mathematical techniques for image reconstruction, including filtered backprojection and iterative approaches

  • Issues of image quality, especially related to resolution, signal-to-noise ratio, quantitative and dynamic imaging, and dose.

MRI

  • Fundamentals of MRI: spin, Larmor frequency, T1, T2, T2* contrast

  • Spatial encoding: K-space, gradient echo, spin echo.

  • Advanced MR techniques such as diffusion, MR spectroscopy and perfusion.

  • Safety and hardware in MR imaging.
