Beschrijving
According to the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals logistics is defined as "the process of planning, implementing, and controlling procedures for the efficient and effective transportation and storage of goods including services, and related information from the point of origin to the point of consumption for the purpose of conforming to customer requirements."
Logistics activities should be in line with other business activities such as marketing and purchasing, in order to create sustainable competitive advantages for individual companies and service providers, and for the supply chain as a whole. Given the strategic importance of logistics for individual organizations and supply chains, it is vital to know how the performance of logistics activities is measured, and how these activities can be modelled and improved.
Therefore in this course different logistics aspects are discussed and analyzed. A selection of quantitative methodologies are introduced to model and provide solutions to a wide range of relevant problems in logistics.
We focus on two classes of logistics problems:
Logistics problems within organizations: forecasting and demand modeling; inventory management; clustering and classification of items.
Distribution problems.
Methodologies include analytical models, linear programming models, basic data mining techniques.
