Teachers in Engineering Education: Professionalization

This 5-ECTS course is part of the 15-EC module ‘Student Teachers in Engineering Education’, which offers an exciting opportunity for students with an interest in higher education to develop or improve their teaching competencies at a student teacher level.

It consists of three interrelated courses of 5 EC (SL4520, SL4525, SL4530) in which students will gain hands-on experience in designing, teaching, supervising and assessing, combined with a deeper-level insight in the underlying mechanisms based on the current state of the literature.

Moreover, students are enabled to grow and develop personally and professionally as student teachers in the dynamic, complex university context, as we will provide the opportunity to develop mindsets, skills and strategies needed to navigate with confidence to a professional in teaching.  

This 5-ECTS course Professionalization focuses on developing knowledge and skills related to professionalization in the context of engineering education. In this course the following question is central: what do you need to grow and develop personally and professionally as a student teacher in the dynamic university context?  In this course we will map the current state of literature on several key concepts related to Professionalization and Personal Professional Identity from different perspectives and link them to real-life cases and experiences. We aim to provide you with mindsets, skills and strategies needed to navigate with confidence to a professional in teaching. Through lectures, interactive discussions, case studies, and practical exercises, you will explore key aspects of professional identity, complex workplace dynamics, and personal growth. 

The assessment is based on 3 assignments:

1.   Personal professional Development Plan (50%)

2.   Reflection report on an interview with professional(s) (30 %)

3.   Detailed analysis of a particular educational setting, your personal challenges and ways to develop competencies to handle the challenge (20%)

All  assignments must be passed with a sufficient grade in order to successfully complete the course. Assessment criteria are provided on Brightspace.

The assignments have to be handed in before the deadline, otherwise they will be graded Insufficient. Students needing to turn work in late due to personal circumstances must contact the lecturer or the Academic Counsellor prior to the deadline, in order to make arrangements.

If an assignment is graded insufficient, there is only one opportunity to do a re-take. The deadline for this retake will be defined by the lecturer. All partial grades expire at the end of the academic year.

The final grade is determined by the weighted average of the three components.

Assignments will be checked for original content by means of plagiarism detection.

All students are automatically registered for all assessments. Students have to register for resits with the lecturer via email. Deadlines are communicated via Brightspace.
