Student Teachers in Engineering Education: Feedback and Assessment

This course is part of the 15-ECTS module ‘Student Teachers in Engineering Education’, which offers an exciting opportunity for students with an interest in higher education to develop or improve their teaching competencies at a student teacher level.

It consists of three interrelated courses of 5 EC (SL4520, SL4525, SL4530) in which students will gain hands-on experience in designing, teaching, supervising and assessing, combined with a deeper-level insight in the underlying mechanisms based on the current state of the literature.

Moreover, students are enabled to grow and develop personally and professionally as student teachers in the dynamic, complex university context, as we will provide the opportunity to develop mindsets, skills and strategies needed to navigate with confidence to a professional in teaching.  

This 5-ECTS course Feedback and Assessment focuses on developing knowledge and skills related to feedback and assessment in the context of engineering education. Assessment drives learning? Or should learning drive assessment? And what is the role of students in their assessment? In this course we will discuss the complex relation between assessment and learning. Different assessment paradigms are introduced, and we will discuss concepts like assessment for, as and of learning, different functions of assessment, the utility of assessment, item construction, grading and effective feedback. You will learn how to apply assessment strategies and feedback mechanisms to enhance student learning and improve the overall quality of education.

The final assessment consists of three components: 

• Assessment Design (40%)  
  Includes intended learning outcomes, test matrix, item samples, and rationale.  

• Feedback Analysis (40%)  
  A critical evaluation of feedback given and received in a real or simulated teaching context.  

• Reflective Essay (20%)  
  A personal reflection on the role of feedback and assessment in your future teaching. 

Each component must be passed with a sufficient grade in order to successfully complete the course. If a component is assessed as insufficient, it may be retaken once, based on the feedback provided. The final grade is determined by the weighted average of the three components. All partial grades expire at the end of the year.  

All students are automatically registered for all assessments. Students need to register for resits with the teacher via email. Deadlines are communicated via BrightSpace.  

Students needing to turn work in late due to personal circumstances must contact the Academic Counsellor prior to turning it in to make arrangements. Other late work might not be graded.
