Student Teachers in Engineering Education: Develop and Teach

This course is part of the 15-EC module ‘Student Teachers in Engineering Education’, which offers an exciting opportunity for students with an interest in higher education to develop or improve their teaching competencies at a student teacher level.

It consists of three interrelated courses of 5 EC (SL4520, SL4525, SL4530) in which students will gain hands-on experience in designing, teaching, supervising and assessing, combined with a deeper-level insight in the underlying mechanisms based on the current state of the literature. Moreover, students are enabled to grow and develop personally and professionally as student teachers in the dynamic, complex university context, as we will provide the opportunity to develop mindsets, skills and strategies needed to navigate with confidence to a professional in teaching. 

This 5-EC course Develop and Teach focuses on developing knowledge and skills related to the development and improvement of teaching materials and the activity of teaching in the context of engineering education. Who are you trying to teach? What should they learn? How do people learn, anyhow? In this course the emphasis is on developing the skills for teaching in various settings, such as large groups (lectures) and small groups (tutorials; projects; supervision). How do you prepare? How do you activate and motivate your audience? Which formats to choose? How to deal with differences? How to align learning goals with teaching activities and assessment (see also the course Feedback and Assessment)?

The final assessment consists of three components:

·       Development of teaching materials (30%)
Includes critical analysis of existing materials, construction of assignments, lay-out of a lecture.

·       Teaching skills (50%)
Includes observing your peers and being observed by your peers using observation schemes.  

·       Reflective Essay (20%)
A personal teaching philosophy on your (developing) style of teaching.

Each component must be passed with a sufficient grade to successfully complete the course. If a component is assessed as insufficient, it may be retaken once, based on the feedback provided. The final grade is determined by the weighted average of the three components. All partial grades expire at the end of the year.

All students are automatically registered for all assessments. Students need to register for resits with the teacher via email. Deadlines are communicated via BrightSpace.

Students needing to turn work in late due to personal circumstances must contact the Academic Counsellor prior to turning it in to make arrangements. Other late work might not be graded.
