Heat Storage
Beschrijving
Due to temporal mismatch in availability and demand for heat, heat storage is needed. In this course you will learn that the need for storage is determined by the variations and mismatches in demand and supply profiles. Also, Power to heat is enabled by heat storage. Depending on the required storage requirements (volume, cycle length, temperature level) you will learn to design a heat storage system and quantify heat losses. The heat storage technologies covered in this course are:
-Sensible heat storage: subsurface, pits, tanks
-Latent heat storage: Phase change materials
Because heat storage systems enable the use of heat sources, but are no heat sources themselves, the economics of heat storage is often complex. Therefore, the integration of heat storage in business cases is also covered in this course.
Toetsing
Formative
Weekly exercises / small assignments related to individual storage technologies.
The main weekly homework assignments on each of the storage technologies are put together as a portfolio in the appendix of the summative assignment report. The portfolio must be complete to be assessed for the summative assignment.
Summative:
Group (2 students) design assignment, assessed via report and presentation [75%].
Exam [25%].
Final grade calculation: (0.25 * written exam + 0.75 * group assignment)
Resit/ Repair opportunities:
In case of an insufficient final result, repair options may exist in accordance with Article 17A, Times and number of examinations, sub 1, of the Teaching and Examination Regulations, for:
-Written exam: resit next period
-Group assignment: re-submit assignment
Disclaimer: information may change depending on unforeseen circumstances or measures (see: TER Art 2, sub 5).
