Hydrogen is a vital element in the energy transition. While sustainable energy sources such as solar and wind plants will power the planet, this energy needs to be converted in chemical bonds to provide storage, fuel and resources to our future energy system. Hydrogen is the most simple chemical bond that can be made by (electro)chemistry. Hence, we will discuss the various (electro-)chemical ways that hydrogen can be produced and discuss the main impediments for the implementation of this technology. Once the hydrogen is produced it will need to be stored and converted. Hence, we will discuss the basics of different storage methods: as a gas, liquid, adsorbed or absorbed inside appropriate solids. Furthermore, the use of hydrogen as a fuel in several types of fuel cells will be discussed.
