Beschrijving

A transition to renewable energy is needed for our climate and welfare. In this course, you will learn how to assess the potential for energy reduction and the potential of renewable energy sources like hydropower, wind, solar, biomass, geothermal and other environmental sources of heat. The content is an introduction to the tracks in the Sustainable Energy Technology Masters that are organized around the energy carriers heat and electricity. You will be introduced to assessing the energy balance of a country or region and its importance to understand the opportunities and challenges for the transition to renewable energy. The basic principles of energy transition models will be discussed. The physical and chemical principles that determine the impact of our energy consumption on the earth's climate are briefly discussed, as well. This course gives an overview of the most important renewable energy sources, the challenges to incorporate those in power supply, heating and cooling systems and the need for storage. You'll learn how to integrate sources, storage and transportation of (thermal) energy in an energy system, and take an engineering approach to look for solutions and design a 100% sustainable energy system.
