Game Design Project

Summary

The simulation game design project offers conceptual insights as well as hands on experience with simulation-gaming (SG). SG is an established field of practice with proven value for instance in the field of spatial and urban planning, ecology, engineering and design, public administration, business management, learning, research and consultancy. The staggering growth and success of the video gaming industry has triggered the interest in simulation games - from paper based games to video games for learning and policy making - even more. Besides creativity and enthusiasm, there are no entry requirements. In this course, students acquire advanced knowledge in, and experience with, designing simulation games for serious use, i.e. for policy- and decision support, organization and management and professional learning.

Your final grade will be based on the following points:

- Attendance and active participation during classes and workshops (required, no grade)

- Grade for the game design assignment (group work 4-6 persons) counts for 80% of the final grade

- Grade for the essay assignment (group work 2 persons) counts for 20% of the final grade

- Facilitation of the warm-up game (same group as game design assignment) have to be done (required, no grade)

Final grade of the course is 0,8 x grade game design + 0,2 x grade essay assignment, and student have to active present and facilitated a warm-up game. To sufficiently finish the course the weighted average have to be 5,75 or higher.

Retake:

- For practical reasons, there is no retake opportunity for the game design assignment

- The essay can be partly repaired, the essay can be improved, maximum grade of the essay is a 6

- If a student can not join the assigned date for the facilitation of the warm-up game, we will look for an additional opportunity during the course weeks.
