Complex Systems Engineering
Beschrijving
The course introduces design and systems thinking in complex sociotechnical systems in line with the core orientation of the CoSem MSc programme. Students learn important concepts related to complex systems engineering and how to apply these to different cases. The goal of the course is to master the correct vocabulary and to learn how to look at complex socio-technical systems.
The course consists of three parts:
Part 1 - Design thinking
This part covers the basics of designing interventions in complex socio-technical systems. Topics discussed include analyses vs design, design cycles, design approaches, and scientific design.
Part 2 - Systems thinking
This part covers an introduction to systems thinking and to complex systems/complexly science. Topics discussed include systems thinking, complex socio-technical systems, and complex systems properties.
Part 3 - Design in Complex Systems
This final part combines the two previous parts and focuses on design in complex systems. It covers topics such as systemic design, transdisciplinary design and research, systems modeling and simulation, and project and risk management.
