Quantum Computation and Quantum Programming

FaculteitTechnische Natuurwetenschappen
NiveauMaster
Studiejaar2025-2026

Beschrijving

Quantum computing has been a theoretical concept for decades that has brought a zoo of quantum algorithms in theory. However, with the advent of real-world quantum computers, it is possible to explore quantum computing in practice. This course will teach you

- the theoretical background of quantum computation,

- to implement certain quantum algorithms with state-of-the-art tools,

- to execute them on simulators and real-world quantum computers and,

- to interpret the outcome.

During this course you will get hands-on experience with different quantum algorithms and the challenges involved in their application to real-world problems.

Toetsing

The assessment consists of two take-home exams to be made and handed in individually per student and two complementary exams in multiple-choice format in the weeks that the take-home exams are due and on the same topics. No exam registration is needed.

Additionally, there is a presentation on the group project, which includes a question-and-answer session.

The final grade is calculated as follows:

20% take-home exam 1 + 20% take-home exam 2 + 10% multiple-choice exam 1 + 10% multiple-choice exam 2 + 40% group project

An oral exam is offered as "generic resit". Note that this option is not meant to improve the grade but to compensate for one or more failed assessment components.
