Offshore Research Project

This course equips you with the critical skills necessary to conduct novel research in offshore and dredging engineering, with a focus on physical experimentation. You will follow a structured process, including conception of the experiments, design, pre-analysis, data collection, post-analysis, and validation. Through this, you will gain experience in interpreting collected data, drawing meaningful conclusions, and reflecting critically on your research activities.
After training on relevant experimental methodologies, such as Pi theorem, scaling laws, measurement techniques and signal processing, as well as on safety in the labs, physical experiments will be carried out in a relevant lab. Following the FAIR principles, you will learn how to analyse and visualize your obtained data to draw scientifically relevant conclusions.
The course offers multiple experimental set-ups to conduct experiments in small groups. You can express your motivated preference for a specific set-up through the individual reflection portfolio of the course OE44195. Your allocation to a specific setup will be based on both your motivation and practical considerations.
Toetsing
The course is assessed based on group work. To be assessed, your presence and active contribution during the lab experiment is required. The group work covers Study Goals 1-4. The group work will be assessed based on a final report (67%), and an oral QenA session (33%). The QenA will be preceded by a short presentation (10-15 minutes) and will result in an individual grade. To pass the course, both the report and the QenA must receive a minimum grade of 5.8. The QenA requires your active participation to receive a grade; students will be questioned individually on their report content and on topics covered during the course.
In case the final report is graded lower than 5.8, your group will have the opportunity to submit an updated report by the end of the first September following the course. Updated reports cannot receive a grade higher than 5.8. If your grade for the QenA is lower than 5.8, you have the opportunity of a second individual QenA by the end of the first September following the course.
Your performance on study goals 5-7 is expressed in an individual reflection portfolio, which will be assessed in the course OE44195.
Any deviation from the described assessment procedure requires approval from the Board of Examiners.
