Beschrijving

Nanobiology MSc students are required to do a broadening research project in addition to their MEP. The company internship is one of the options available to students to fulfill this requirement.

Students can schedule their broadening research project at any point in their Master programme, before or after their MEP.

The internship comprises 15 ECTS, or the equivalent of about 10 weeks of full-time work. The company internship should be carried out in a Nanobiology related company where MSc Nanobiology knowledge is necessary for the project.

The goals of a company internship are:

  • To become familiar with a professional working environment for a Nanobiology graduate.

  • To apply academic knowledge and skills, acquired in the degree course, to a project in an industrial setting.

  • To participate in a project in a professional working environment.

  • To get practical training on the job.

The company internship is supervised by an internal (Nanobiology Green list) and an external (company) supervisor. The company supervisor is responsible for day-to-day supervision. The student will report to their Nanobiology supervisor on a regular basis about progress made on the project. Both supervisors will evaluate the final report and give a grade; the final grade is ultimately decided by the internal supervisor.

Students must complete one research project, either broadening or Master End Project in the research group of a Nanobiology Greenlist supervisor. Doing a company internship means that students must do their MEP in a Nanobiology GreenList research group. Students may not do both projects with the same GreenList supervisor, this includes 2nd supervisor for Internships.

The student is responsible for finding an internship position. Students are advised to start the orientation process at least 4 months in advance if planning to stay in the Netherlands, and at least 6 months if planning to go abroad. The Internship Office has an assisting, coordinating and administrative role.

Toetsing

Assessment by the internal (Nanobiology green list) supervisor and by the external (company) supervisor. The internal supervisor is the examiner of the internship.
During this internship the students will be judged on:

  • Performance in regular tasks

  • Active participation

  • Oral presentation

  • Written report

The internship is usually concluded with a presentation within the period of the internship. For a speedy assessment, it is helpful to invite the internal supervisor to attend if possible (though attendance by the internal supervisor is not necessary). The internship is first assessed by the company supervisor. The internal supervisor then reads the report and has an assessment meeting with the student before deciding on the final grade.

Students are also required to write an experience report for the Internship Office. This is separate from your internship report and only needs to be sent to the Internship office. Final grades are not processed until the experience report is submitted.

Beginning in academic year 2026/2027, all internships will be graded as pass/fail. This rule applies to any internship that ends after August 31, 2026.
