Quantum Mechanics for Nanobiology 1

FaculteitTechnische Natuurwetenschappen
NiveauBachelor
Studiejaar2025-2026

Beschrijving

This description applies to both part 1 (NB3017) and part 2 (NB3018) of Quantum mechanics for Nanobiology:

In this course we introduce the concepts and applications of quantum mechanics in the context of nanobiology. We will cover basic quantum ideas (particle-wave duality, atomic orbitals and shells, tunneling) and put them on a solid mathematical foundation (part 1). Building on this foundation, we also explore atomic emission and absorption spectra, the fundamental principle behind lasers, the quantum mechanics behind chemistry, and properties of solids, especially conductors, semiconductors and insulators (part 2).

The cornerstone of the course (and quantum mechanics) is the Schrödinger equation, together with its solutions (known as the wavefunctions) and the associated statistical interpretation. As the Schrödinger equation is a differential equation, and the wavefunctions are its eigenfunctions, this course combines what students have learned in their earlier physics and math courses. In explaining the periodic table and the mechanism behind photosynthesis, it also directly connects to the courses chemistry and physical biology of the cell.
