Beschrijving

In this course the student will be introduced to some key aspects of philosophical and ethical issues in the context of science and nanobiology.

The understanding gained in this course is needed to appreciate how the knowledge learned in other courses was generated, its impact on society and to appreciate that this knowledge may change. Explicit discussion of scientific and professional ethics develops a students understanding of their contribution to a cooperative and productive scientific community.

Toetsing

There are 3 required elements. All must be passed separately to receive a pass in the course.

1-Mandatory attendance at all the sessions. (Pass/fail)

2-Weekly individual assignments involving:

  • The writing of a short reflection essay on the lecture topic of the week. (Pass/fail)

  • A case study. (Pass/fail)

You are permitted to miss one session and associated assignments.

3-Group assignment "Interview with a scientist" includes written report: (Pass/fail)

Re-sit:

  • Students who fail the group assignment, may submit a revised version prior to the re-sit week (week 3.5).

  • Students who fail to attend two sessions or do not write and submit two individual assignments on time will have to re-sit. Missing 3 or more sessions and associated assignments (including late submissions) is considered a fail, and students will need to use the transition regulations to complete.
