In this course, we will see various topics which will be important in the rest of your study, e.g. in the Mechanics & Optics course (NB1325). In particular, we will talk about
limits,
differentiation,
linearisation,
integration techniques like substitution, integration by parts, and partial fractions, including improper integrals,
separable and first-order linear differential equation,
complex numbers,
second order linear differential equations,
sequences and series
comparison test, alternating series test, and ratio test for convergence of series,
power series and Taylor series
multivariate functions,
partial derivatives and the chain rule,
line integrals of scalar and vector fields.
Toetsing
1. The assessment consists of weekly quizzes and a written final exam. The quizzes open at the end of weeks Q1.1 to Q1.8 and have a deadline in the next week. They can be done at home using an honour code regulation. Each of these eight quizzes can be taken up to five times in the relevant week, with the best result counting. Only the six best quizzes count towards the grade. The written final exam takes place in week Q1.10.
2. The resit consists of a written exam in Q2.7.
3. The resit of the quizzes is the fact that each quiz can be taken five times.
4. The final grade is composed of
Written exam: 75%
Quizzes: 25% (average of the best 6 quizzes)
Each must be at least a 5.0 in order to receive a passing overall grade.
5. Registration for the written exam and resit is done via Osiris. You do not need to register for the weekly quizzes.
6. Students needing to turn work in late due to personal circumstances must contact the Academic Counsellor prior to turning it in to make arrangements. Other late work might not be graded.
There will be formative assessment via individualised feedback to exercises in Grasple.
