Molecular Genetics

In this course the student will learn the principles of genetics, ranging from classical Mendelian genetics to the most recent molecular genetics techniques. Both the theoretical and practical aspects of genetics will be taught, including DNA/RNA structure, gene function, genome organization, inheritance, DNA replication, repair and recombination and mutation. A major part of this course will cover various classical and modern molecular genetic techniques from the genomics era. The course includes individual and group exercises focusing on solving genetic problems. The knowledge gained in this course will show the student how to design and interpret genetic experiments, to answer relevant genetic questions. Students will need this knowledge for other courses including Structural Biochemistry, Molecular biological techniques, Physical Biology of the Cell, and Evolutionary and Developmental Biology.

The assessment:

• presence and active participation during assignments (5%). Students have to actively participate in 6 out of 10 assignments, otherwise they will score a 1 as grade.  

• quiz (20%). 

• final written exam (75%). 

The average grade of the quiz (20%) and assignments (5%) together should be at least 5.0. The grade of the final written exam should be at least 5.0.

•  Enrollment in Brightspace and uploading assignments in Brightspace in time is considered registration for assessment of non-written exam portion of the assessment. Students must enroll in Brightspace for the course no later than the first week of classes.

• Registration for the written exam is via Osiris and deadlines are determined by TU Delft regulations on exam registration.

The resit:

• The resit for the final written exam (75%) is scheduled in week q2.7. The resit for the quiz (20%) will be scheduled in q1.9. There is no resit for the assignments.

• The grade for the quiz and assignments can carry over one year in case a student does not pass the course.

• If a student is unable to be present during 6 or more assignments due to urgent reasons, the student should contact the academic counselor to make arrangements with the teachers or board of examiners.
