Fundamentals of Marine Engineering
Beschrijving
Marine engineering is the field of engineering and science that deals with the design and operation of main and auxiliary systems on board ships and other marine or offshore structures. These systems include mechanical, electrical and other distribution systems. In the course Fundamentals of Marine Engineering the following systems and their main components will be covered:
Propulsion systems
Electric power generation and distribution
Auxiliary systems, including cooling water, fuel, lubrication oil and other distribution systems
Safety systems, including fire-fighting and bile-ballast water systems
Hotel systems, including heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) and refrigeration systems
Waste heat recovery (WHR) systems
The course allows you to develop of a thorough understanding of the working principles of these systems and their main components, which is indispensable for a marine engineer tasked with designing and integrating them. The marine engineer needs to make sure that all systems will operate properly in all environmental conditions that can be encountered by the ship while navigating the seas (e.g. extreme temperatures, rough seas, etc.), while taking into account any additional design requirements for all systems which concern their vulnerability, maintainability, energy efficiency and/or emission of pollutant substances.
