Numerical Ship Hydrodynamics

FaculteitMechanical Engineering
NiveauMaster
Studiejaar2025-2026

Beschrijving

Numerical methods for ship hydrodynamics will be discussed and used to predict some relevant ship hydrodynamic phenomena. This will cover both inviscid potential methods for diffraction and wave making prediction and viscous methods for the prediction of damping.

The course will cover theoretical development of panel methods and methods for predicting viscous flow. Using mathematical concepts such as Greens function theory and weak formulations and there use in constructing numerical fluid models. More practical aspects such as mesh generation and error estimation will also be covered. Finally, the students will be familiarized with remote computing on a dedicated linux cluster.

Toetsing

Two written reports both counting for 50% of the total grade. Each report should have agreed of at least 5.8. A resubmit is capped at 70% to factor in the feedback.

Report 1: Analyse the diffraction in waves and wave making resistance in flat water using potential methods
Report 2: Analyse of a planning or slamming ship using a viscous flow solver. Or some equivalent simplified flow problem with a prominent free-surface effect.
