Beschrijving

This course describes the effects of irradiation of mainly metals en alloys and explains the mechanisms behind those effects, especially for neutron radiation. The first part explains how damage is created, quantified analytically, and simulated. The differences and similarities between damage created by various particles is discussed. This forms the basic understanding for the physical, microstructural and mechanical changes metals and alloys undergo due to radiation. The 2nd and 3rd part of the courses discusses radiation-induced physical, microstructural and mechanical effects qualitatively and quantitatively.

This course is designed for Material Science en Engineering, Applied Physics, and Chemical Engineering students, who are interested in material changes resulting from particle irradiation (mainly neutrons) of materials (mainly metals and alloys) in nuclear and fusion reactors.

Lectures will be given by (guest-)lecturers from NRG, DIFFER and TU Delft. Visits to NRG and DIFFER are part of this course. Some of the lectures will be given at NRG and DIFFER.
