Beschrijving

Corrosion is a multidisciplinary phenomenon in which chemistry, physics, and materials are essential. This course covers the fundamental aspects of corrosion science. Students will gain basic scientific knowledge to understand the corrosion mechanisms.

The course will discuss the correlation between microstructural features of the metal and the initiation of corrosion, the formation of passive layers, and the role of the environment in corrosion. The most important corrosion mechanisms will be covered. The main barrier protection methods against corrosion and their failure mechanism will be discussed.

Following is a list of the main topics addressed in the course:

  • Introduction to the electrochemistry in corrosion: thermodynamic and kinetic

  • Passivity of the metals

  • Localised corrosion

  • Protection methods against corrosion: pre-treatments and coatings

  • Advanced techniques in corrosion research

This course will pay great attention to the scientific aspects of corrosion. Students will have the opportunity to know current research topics and their challenges.
