Metals Science II
Beschrijving
1. Processes of microstructural evolution: diffusional and displacive phase transformations, precipitation, solidification, production routes. The fundamentals of these microstructural processes will be discussed, as well as specific applications for alloys like titanium, aluminium, nickel-based superalloys, shape-memory, super-elastic and invar alloys.
2. The character of various defects in the crystalline structure of metals and mechanisms by which they are introduced into the structure. Defects in the crystal structure can be present according to thermal equilibrium, but density and character can be affected by heat treatments, plastic deformation, high-energy radiation.
3. The basics of various properties of metallic alloys in relation to crystal defects. Properties of metals are primarily based on the crystal structure, but highly dependent on the density and character of crystal defects. Properties that will be discussed include mechanical behaviour, ferromagnetic properties, shape-memory behaviour, temperature resistance.
