Electrochemical Energy Storage
Beschrijving
One of the main challenges that mankind faces in the 21st century is the energy transition from fossil fuels and feedstocks to renewable sources. Most renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind energy, are intermittent. Therefore, large scale energy storage is required to successfully increase the share of these renewable energy sources. One way of achieving this is by storing energy using electrochemical systems and devices. This course introduces the principals of electrochemical energy storage and conversion to students new to field.
The course is built up in two parts, a fundamentals and applications part. Examples of topics discussed during the fundamentals part are the thermodynamics and kinetics of electrochemical systems, transport phenomena, the electrochemical double layer, electrocatalysis and an introduction to electrochemical methods and measurements. In the applications part, we will dive deeper into the workings of electrochemical applications such as batteries, electrolysers and fuel cells.
