Advanced Enzymology

FaculteitTechnische Natuurwetenschappen
NiveauMaster
Studiejaar2025-2026

Beschrijving

The course Advanced Enzymology covers basic (bio)chemical principles, which are applied to understanding catalysis by (metallo)-enzymes. This course also focuses on theoretical and practical backgrounds of bioinorganic chemistry and (pre-)steady state enzyme kinetics, as well as on the use of computer visualization programs and AI tools for enzyme design. Students will learn how to employ this knowledge to the determination of the structure of metallo-centers and function in terms of the molecular mechanism of catalysis. To successfully apply (metallo)enzymes in research or industrial applications, specific problems related to the (over)expression of (metallo-)proteins, and engineering enzyme promiscuity are addressed. Many of these aspects will be illustrated by using an important enzyme: methane mono-oxygenase.
