Bioprocess Integration
Beschrijving
- Short recap of bioprocesses in industrial and environmental biotechnology
- Stages in the bioprocess design cycle that are treated in this course: design definition, synthesis, analysis, process assessment
- Flow sheeting and process simulation using dedicated software (SuperPro Designer), to solve mass and energy balances of bioprocesses, to size equipment, and to perform economic assessment
- Operation modes: batch/continuous; cocurrent/countercurrent/crosscurrent
- Bioprocess unit operations and their short-cut design: enzymatic conversion, fermentation, sedimentation, centrifugation, filtration, membrane permeation, L/L extraction, adsorption, ion-exchange, chromatography, evaporation, distillation, precipitation,crystallization
- Selecting and sequencing unit operations; integration of bioprocess functions; in-process recycles; waste destinations
- Batch scheduling and debottlenecking
- Energy streams in bioprocesses; heat integration
- Economic assessment method of SuperPro Designer; sensitivity of process performance to microbial and enzymatic parameters and process settings
Toetsing
During the course three assignments on a case study in teams of up to three students (unrounded assignment grade counting for 50% of the unrounded overall grade) and a final individual written exam (unrounded exam grade also counting for 50%). But if the rounded overall grade is >5.5 while the rounded grade for the exam is <5, the rounded overall grade will be decreased to 5.5.
Calculation examples:
- Assignments 4.70, exam 9.30, rounded overall grade 7.0
- Assignments 9.30, exam 4.70, rounded overall grade 5.5
The exam has a resit. Then the assignments grade will be kept for recalculating the overall grade.
Assignments can be redone only in a next year. Then, the exam grade will be kept, unless the exam is also redone.
