Beschrijving
This course introduces methods commonly used in structural biology. The course covers methods in protein sequence comparison, protein structure prediction and design, virtual drug design as well as an introduction to experimental structure determination methods such as single-particle cryo-electron microscopy and X-ray crystallography. The current applications and limitations of these methods will be discussed. Students will learn how to analyze and explore the function of unknown protein structures and how to evaluate the quality of predicted and experimentally determined structures. Building on this, we will introduce structure guided drug design as an application benefiting from accurate structures and knowledge of their active sites.
Toetsing
A final written exam with short and essay questions (grading).
Students have the opportunity to earn up to 10% bonus points through assignments, which will be added to their exam score. These bonus points are additional and can contribute to the total score, allowing students to exceed the standard maximum score set by the exam.
