Form and Senses

Form & Senses is a multi-sensory design course in which students gain knowledge to understand and explain multi-sensory perception of products and skills to manipulate sensory product properties to be able to design targeted sensory experiences. Students develop their knowledge and skills by practicing how to design auditory, haptic and light properties of objects. In the first part of the course students explore the sensory design space supported by theory and create an intermediary prototype focusing on multisensory form transformation (e.g., designing a cube that has sound, light and haptic features). As an assignment, students will explore a multisensory design space by creating an object (e.g., interactive mobiles, living objects, etc.) that has multi-sensory features. Finally, students will report how this multisensory object has been created with technical specifications.

Form-S takes place in Q3 of the Semester 6 and it deepens students’ knowledge and skills for multisensory form giving and perception-driven design. Students are given a chance to artistically and technically create abstract objects without function but with purpose to evoke sensory experiences. The course will allow students to recognise the importance of multi-sensory form and its impact on people.
