Identity and Portfolio

The applied goal of this course is to support students in creating a meaningful portfolio that will allow them to present themselves as designers, for example to future coaches, potential companies for internship, graduation projects, possible jobs and so on.

To achieve this goal, students will explore their identity as a designer. First, by reflecting on the design experiences they had so far (and collected in the IDME activities. Next, by exploring what motivates them, what inspires them, what values and future vision they have, what their position in the Design Field could be, and so on.

In addition, students will explore different means of visual and verbal presentation, to discover which modes of expression fit their Identity. This will allow them to align content and form of the portfolio.

The coherence of the portfolio will be ensured by emphasizing during the course on the art of storytelling.

The course will not conclude with a finished portfolio as a means in itself, but with the foundation for creating professional portfolios in the future.

The second goal of this course is to introduce the students to the more theoretical aspects of the different perspectives on the concept of Identity. Students will explore these concepts while creating their own.

This theoretical foundation will be valuable for students, first, to have a solid basis for their portfolio, and next, in their future design work, where designing for others always implicates awareness of identity, and the dilemmas this concept elicits.
