Mastering Research Methods

In this course the student will collaborate with experienced researchers of our faculty on mastering scientific research in design and beyond. The student will discuss published research projects with them, and walk in their shoes during an academic research project

Mastering research methods will help the student to develop scientific inquiry skills that are crucial for a plethora of if not all - courses at a university. In any (design) project, it is useful to be able to assess existing knowledge, and decide on the need for gathering new knowledge through research. Moreover, input for solid argumentation typically comes from existing or new research. Knowledge of strengths and shortcomings of research methods is key to stand ones ground.

The course offers hands on research experience beyond creating merely awareness. With the help of experienced researchers, this course provides armor against scientifically proven claims, triggers curiosity into the unknown, and shows the merits of scientific research.

The course includes summative assessment of the research paper (written by duos) about the academic research project.

Formative / peer feedback prepares for this assessment in two ways: feedback on the statistics self-study, and on the parts of the research paper.
