DP4: Designing for Society
Beschrijving
Using design to create meaningful social impact
In Design Project 4 (DP4), Designing for Society, you will explore how design can play a vital role in addressing complex societal challenges. As one of the major design projects within the Industrial Design Engineering bachelor program at TU Delft, this course offers a unique opportunity to engage with real-world issues in collaboration with social designers and societal stakeholders.
Throughout the course, you will investigate how design can contribute to positive change in areas such as food systems, mobility, healthcare, and biodiversity. As the demand grows for socially-engaged designers, particularly within governmental, public, and social-sector organizations, this course equips you with the tools and mindset needed to respond to that call.
What to Expect
In DP4, you will develop a deeper understanding of both human experience and societal systems. You’ll learn how to frame and reframe challenges presented by societal partners, and how to develop a compelling future narrative that envisions meaningful change. Your design intervention will be a well-argued response to this narrative, supported by a clear design statement and its rationale.
The course emphasizes the importance of insights into experience, meaning, and behavior, encouraging you to balance empathy for individuals with awareness of broader societal implications.
Course Structure
The course is structured around three interconnected assignments:
Phase 1: Discover (Group and Individual)
Begin with a team-based exploration of a societal issue through desk and literature research. Then, individually dive into the subjective experiences and meanings that people attach to this domain. You’ll regroup to connect these personal insights to wider societal trends and dynamics, culminating in a shared vision for a preferable future.
Phase 2: Design (Individual)
Independently develop and visualize a concept that responds to your design intention. This includes crafting a clear design rationale, which is a thoughtful explanation of how and why your concept supports the envisioned change (from assignment 1).
Phase 3: Prototype & Reflect (Group)
Collaboratively build an experience prototype to test your assumptions in practice. Analyze and reflect on the social implications of your design, both in terms of its intended impact and the ethical questions it raises.
Why take this course?
This is a chance to step into the world of social design, where creativity meets responsibility. You’ll develop the ability to think systemically, act empathetically, and design with intention. Along the way, you’ll gain practical experience, learn how to challenge and reframe societal questions, grow your critical thinking skills, and build a portfolio that reflects your ability to create meaningful, socially-relevant design.
