In the course Bildung students are encouraged to explore and deepen the their individual interests and natural talents as a fortitude to become an open-minded resilient young professional. This course is an opportunity to incorporate students natural ‘tool(s)’ set and personal interdisciplinary knowledge into their studies.

In addition students will explore a European city of importance during this ‘Modern period of the 20th Century in the context of other cities such as Münich, Vienna, Paris, guided by the lecture; through documentaries, literature, study materials. With a focus on the Interbellum period (1890-1939) students will seek for a personal theme during the course integrating Art, Architecture, Music, Philosophy, Arts en Crafts and themes related to engineering.

Students are challenged to think beyond the field of engineering to create a new vision on engineering and individual ambitions in a dynamically changing society. Students will meet passionate senior professionals and companies in both engineering, art and science to collect a variety of interpretations, insights and values of experts. Students will be able to explore and practice their personal (yet unknown) creativity and learn how to express their ideas and ambitions to strengthen the impact of their authentic values in relation to their academic disciplines. The course consists of five (+ optional study trip) sets of activities:

1. Plenary meetings with a variety of themes. During these meetings group assignments and reflections will happen. Students prepare plenary meetings individually or in a team. Peer to peer reviews.

2. Individual guidance based on an individual document (to explore and develop a individual way of expression: writing, video, graphics … ).

3. Dialogues with professionals - individual variety of interviews with professionals or role-models based on students’ personal interest and ambition.

4. Study-trips (art- or engineering related such as museum or/and high tech company based on both the group and students’ interest)

A four-day study trip to München (in Q3 week 8). A minor financial contribution, depending on the number of participating students.
