This is a theme course of IPD theme 3: Materialising Futures.

Computational design empowers designers to utilise computer algorithms to automate aspects of the design process. It facilitates the exploration of a wide array of design options and can incorporate optimization techniques, particularly useful for digital fabrication. To use it effectively, a comprehensive understanding of geometry, data, algorithms, and related concepts is essential.

Starting with computational thinking, geometric modelling, and CAD techniques, this course helps students learn computational design methods using Rhino Grasshopper. The curriculum covers various topics, including parametric modelling, algorithmic design, generative design, data-driven design, and extended reality (XR)-based evaluation. Through these areas of study, students establish a strong foundation in computational design methods and develop the skills to create and assess innovative designs.

Toetsing

The study goals of this course will be assessed by:

- Individual exam (50%)

- Group assignment (50%)

Summative individual exam: This computer-based exam comprises two parts: a series of questions based on learning objectives, and Grasshopper implementation tasks where students complete various tasks within a set time, with multiple approaches encouraged. Students have access to computers and the internet during the exam.

Summative group assignment: In this assignment, students are given a design task, e.g. a personalised design. The group collects and translates requirements into designs using computational approaches. (Virtual) Prototypes, created through advanced manufacturing methods like 3D printing or VR, are then evaluated by the target group. The deliverables include a concise presentation with a video showcasing the design process and/or results, a comprehensive report supported by Grasshopper based program(s)
