AI Products and Services

This is a theme course of IPD theme 1: Digital Design and AI.

This course is tailored for the Master's program in Integrated Product Design, and serves as an introduction to the theme "Digital Design and Artificial Intelligence".

The course provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the advanced digital technologies that support the functionalities of and interaction with AI-based products and services. It covers advanced Artificial Intelligence concepts, capabilities, and (ethical and legal) principles, and contextualises the role of technologies (e.g., data, data analytics, Internet of Things) that enable the design and development of trustworthy and sustainable AI-enhanced solutions.

Using a combination of Python scripting and rapid prototyping tools, students will learn how to develop and evaluate machine learning algorithms, language technologies, computer vision technologies, and human-AI interactions. Through a blend of theoretical knowledge, case studies, and hands-on activities, students will gain the skills needed to design innovative intelligent products and services. Such knowledge and skills will be put into practice during the Product Futures Design Studio.

The study goals of this course will be assessed by:

- Individual Portfolio (30%): Every week, students will be presented with a formative exercise to develop theoretical and/or practical knowledge. Each student will individually document their insights and learning in the form of posters, presentations, and/or demonstrations, which will be collected into a final portfolio handed in and assessed at the end of the course.

- Individual Exam (70%): multiple-choice and open-answer questions.

Formative assessment for Individual Portfolio: Students will receive feedback on weekly formative exercises, which give them an opportunity to improve their deliverables before handing in the individual portfolio at the end of the course.

Formative assessment for final exam: Students will receive feedback on weekly online quizzes, which will prepare them for the final exam.
