This is a DfI programme course.

This course introduces students to the field of design research. Framed through the perspectives of Research to Design, Research for Design, and Research through Design, it offers a broad overview of the key approaches that shape how research and design interact.

Students will explore a range of methods relevant to the DfI context—each serving different purposes. Some methods help investigate context, others test and challenge assumptions, and some take a more exploratory approach to imagine alternative scenarios and futures. The course emphasizes strategic use of both quantitative and qualitative methods, as well as hybrid approaches, helping students understand when and how to apply each effectively.

In addition to theoretical grounding, students will put their learning into practice by applying one design research method within an ongoing research project at the faculty. Working closely with faculty researchers, they will ensure their approach is both methodologically sound and contextually meaningful.

By the end of the course, students will be equipped to navigate the complexities of contemporary design research. They will develop the skills to apply diverse methods rigorously, address real-world challenges, and make well-informed design decisions in their future professional practice.
