Societal Challenge Project

In EPA221B, you will apply the knowledge you obtained in the first year of the EPA Program to a (partial) solution for a specific societal challenge. In this course, you will work on one of the cases defined by an external case owner, such as the Ministry of the Interior, the Digicampus, or the Municipality of the Hague. The projects address a real-life problem, i.e. a societal challenge, and allow you to work on a real consultancy job with a real customer organization under the supervision of a group of dedicated staff members from both TU Delft and the case owners. The projects aim at integrating elements from the 'Policy en Politics' line of the EPA curriculum, as well as the 'Modelling en Simulation' line. You will work in groups of three to five students and present your solution to the case owner and the TU Delft staff at the end of the course. Students who are studying abroad at the time of this course will follow the online version of this course. Students who are not studying abroad need to follow the on-campus version of this course.

This course contains both formative and summative elements.

Ungraded/formative: content-related lectures, interaction/ questions (activating elements) during the lectures, World Cafes, meetings with the client, and feedback sessions.

Graded/summative:

–      Assignment 1 (grade per group, but individual deviations are possible): annotated PowerPoint presentation slides of the intermediate product.
20% of the final grade

–      Assignment 2 (grade per group, but individual deviations are possible): combination of annotated PowerPoint presentation slides and video of the product that the group developed
80% of the final grade

–      Assignment 3 (pass/fail, individual): reflection

–      Assignment 4 (pass/fail, group): in-person presentation at the final event

–      Final grade >=5,75 for assignments 1 and 2 combined + pass for assignments 3 and 4

For each assignment, students have at most one opportunity to submit a repair assignment:

• Assignment 1:
  Students may only submit a repair assignment if:
  a) they submitted a PowerPoint presentation with at least ten slides containing relevant content; and
  b) the PowerPoint presentation was assessed with a grade of 5.7 or lower.

Students who received a grade of 5.8 or higher for Assignment 1 are not eligible to submit a repair assignment and therefore cannot resubmit their work.

• Assignment 2:
  Students may only submit a repair assignment if:
  a) they submitted both the annotated PowerPoint slides and the video, containing relevant content; and
  b) their assignment was graded between 4.0 and 5.7.

The repair assignment can result in a maximum grade of 6.0.
Students who received a grade of 5.8 or higher are not eligible for a repair and cannot resubmit their assignment.
If Assignment 2 was assessed with a grade below 4.0, no repair opportunity is provided.

·         Assignment 3:
Students may only submit a repair assignment if their individual reflection was assessed as a ‘fail’.

·         Assignment 4:
Students may only be given a repair opportunity if their group presentation was assessed as a ‘fail’.

Students have the right to inspect their assessed work for at least 20 working days following the announcement of the results of each of the assignments.
