Fundamentals of Water Quality and Treatment
Beschrijving
Please contact lecturer Dr. B.M. van Breukelen ideally BEFORE the start of the new study year for registration and additional information.
This is an equivalency course and replaces the following course from the old master programme: CIE4495-13 (4 ECTS). It is similar to the "Environmental Water Quality" parts of part 1 of module ENVM1401 in the new programme (3 ECTS). Please see the study guide description of ENVM1401 and the information below.
Please contact lecturer Dr. B.M. van Breukelen ideally before the start of the new study year for registration and additional information. It is strongly advised to complete the missing 1 ECTS by attending the "Environmental Water Quality" part as part of the EE core program module in Q1. That 1 ECTS part consists of 4x2-hours lectures and a 4 hours water quality practical plus 4 hours reporting. That would be the perfect introduction to ENVM1401 and leads to 4 ECTS in total. In case you do not do that part of the core program module, following ENVM1401 will be more challenging as you miss the basic introduction on environmental water quality. The missing 1 ECTS can then be obtained by an extra assignement of 1 ECTS to be completed after ENVM1401.
Generally, the contents of this course are on understanding water quality and how it changes in the environment naturally and by management; how to measure the different water quality parameters, how to interpret water quality data and link to key physical (e.g. mixing, dispersion) and biogeochemical processes (e.g. mineral dissolution/precipitation, sorption, ion-exchange, redox processes, attachment/detachment of micro-organisms, etc).
