High-Voltage DC
Beschrijving
This course presents the physical challenges faced by HVDC power components. Electrical insulation behaves quite differently under DC voltage compared to AC. This will influence the entire cycle from design to testing. Knowledge and insight of electric field behavior under DC stress is given theoretically and illustrated by practical applications from power industry (hvdc cable, converter transformers, bushings).
The course contents are:
Introduction to HVDC
Electric fields under different DC conditions
Surface charge, origin, effect and measurement
Space charge, origin, effect and measurement
Breakdown mechanisms
Partial discharges and DC tests

Toetsing
Written examination (80% final written exam, 20% course project)
