Beschrijving

In this course, mathematical models and methods are given to describe and evaluate communication systems for the transmission of digital signals:

- basics of signals and systems:

* description of signals and decibel notation,

* time-domain versus frequency-domain: LTI-systems, convolution, impulse response, Fourier-transformation, transfer function, filtering and definition of bandwidths,

- propagation loss in guided (cable) and unguided (wireless) media,

- noise and system noise calculations (link-budget),

- signal sampling, analogue pulse modulation (PAM, PCM, Delta-modulation),

- digital waveforms in baseband, power spectral density and spectral efficiency,

- line codes,

- bandpass signals and -systems: complex baseband description, modulation, demodulation, generic transmitter and receiver concepts: super heterodyne and direct conversion receiver,

- digital modulation techniques (OOK, FSK, BPSK, QPSK, MSK, QAM),

- matched filtering,

- bit error probability after detection of digital signals.

Toetsing

The exam Digital Communication Systems is a 3 hour written closed-book exam covering the full course content at the end of the 1st or 2nd quarter (resit)..

During the exam, you are allowed to use the following materials:
- the overview “Tables and Figures to be used at the exam Digital Communication Systems (EE3315TU)”, as made available on Brightspace,
- an original own handwritten equation sheet: 1 page A4, written on both sides, (not type-written, no copy and it should not contain worked out exercises or examples),
- a non-programmable electronic calculator.

The final grade of Digital Communication Systems is based solely on the grade obtained for the exam, which is is rounded to the nearest half.

In case of an insufficient result, repair options may exist in accordance with Article 2, Examination Requirements, Clause 4, of the Implementation Regulations 2023-2024.
