Project-based interdisciplinary course, open to MSc students of all faculties (of LDE universities).
In this project we put together a team of students with varying talents, backgrounds, and perspectives to achieve what none of them could do alone: to design and implement a serious game aimed at being applied in a real-world setting (educational, social, professional- and health-related, etc.). The emphasis is both on constructively fulfilling the game requirements, and on deploying the adequate technology for that purpose, solving a variety of possibly conflicting, technical challenges. 
Assignments for this course are provided by real-world commissioners (from startups to NGOs to research institutes), to whom the group will be reporting throughout the project. 
In previous years, various serious game prototypes originated in this course were actually developed and eventually deployed for their intended application; and many more were published and presented by students in international research venues (incl. IEEE CoG, FDG, ICIDS, GALA, ISAGA).

Toetsing

The final grade of the course consists of the following components:

  • Product grade (weighting 55%). Unique for the whole group, based on both the game itself and the required documentation.

  • Process grade (weighting 40%). Including personal contribution, performance, attitude, and peer evaluation.

  • Final presentation (weighting 5%).

The final documentation includes writing a scientific paper and preparing it for actual submission to a conference on serious games and/or their application.

Final grade calculation = 0.5 * Product grade + 0.45 * Process grade + 0.05 * Final presentation

A passing final grade for the course can only be earned when for all components at least a 5.0 is earned, and the weighted final grade is at least a 5.8.

In case of an insufficient final result, repair options may exist in accordance with Article 17A, Times and number of examinations, sub 1, of the Teaching and Examination Regulations, for:

  • Final presentation: resit opportunity

There is no repair possibility for the other components (product and process), since their assessment necessarily requires working in a team over an extended development period.
