Bioinformatics is at the heart of many modern systems biology analyses, and encompasses the application of statistics and computer science to (large-scale) biomolecular datasets. In essence, bioinformatics is about smart ways of extracting knowledge from the enormous amounts of data that can be generated using modern measurement techniques. For instance, it plays an important role in finding the genetic origins of various diseases, such as cancer, diabetes or Alzheimer.

In this course we study some key examples of relevant data-driven bioinformatics methods by reading and discussing a set of selected papers that present interesting DSAIT solutions with significant biological conclusions.

Toetsing

The final grade of the course consists of the following components:

  • Individual Assignment 1: Students are presented with an unseen research paper. The goal is to prepare slides and then give a short presentation explaining, analysing, and discussing a specific part of the paper (focusing on the core idea and methodology). (weighting 60%)

  • Group Presentation: Presentation explaining, analysing, and discussing a prepared scientific paper. (weighting 20%)

  • Individual Assignment 2: formulate critical remarks or answer basic questions on a prepared paper (weighting 20%)

Final grade calculation = 0.6 * Individual Assignment 1 + 0.2 * Group Presentation + 0.2 * Individual Assignment 2

A passing final grade for the course can only be earned when for all components at least a 5.0 is earned, and the weighted final grade is at least a 5.8.

In case of an insufficient final result, repair options may exist in accordance with Article 17A, Times and number of examinations, sub 1, of the Teaching and Examination Regulations, for:

  • Individual Assignment 1: Repair opportunity

  • Group Presentation: Repair opportunity

  • Individual Assignment 2: No
