Beschrijving

Retrieving relevant information is a fundamental activity in today’s knowledge-driven societies. As the volume and variety of data increase at an unprecedented rate, accessing relevant and often unstructured information is becoming increasingly challenging. Information Retrieval (IR) is the field dedicated to the representation, storage, organization, and access of information items. It focuses on providing efficient access to large amounts of unstructured content, including text, images, videos, and more.

The DSAIT4050 - Information Retrieval course aims to is designed to introduce the scientific foundations of different areas that encompass Information Retrieval. The course aims to provide students with basic information retrieval concepts, in addition to more advanced techniques and applications. Students are also provided with a rich and comprehensive catalogue of IR techniques and tools that can be exploited in the design and implementation of IR-related solutions.

Covered topics include:

  • Information Retrieval Models

  • Indexing techniques

  • Query processing

  • Web Search

  • Evaluation of information retrieval systems

  • Recommender Systems

Toetsing

The final grade of the course consists of the following components:

  • Individual Assignment: foundational IR tasks - text processing and matching (weighting 10%)

  • Individual Report: based on reflection on core IR scholarly articles (weighting 20%)

  • Group Report: identify a research gap and design a solution; then reflect on lessons learned (weighting 70%)

Final grade calculation = 0.1 * Individual Assignments + 0.2 * Individual Report + 0.7 * Group Report

A passing final grade for the course can only be earned when at least a 5.0 is earned for all components, and the weighted final grade is at least a 5.8.

In case of an insufficient final result, repair options may exist in accordance with Article 17A, Times and number of examinations, sub 1, of the Teaching and Examination Regulations, for:

  • Individual Assignment: Repair opportunity

  • Individual Report: Repair opportunity

  • Group Report: Repair opportunity

Disclaimer: information may change depending on unforeseen circumstances or measures (see: TER Art 2, sub 5).
