Thesis Project

The Computer Science Thesis Project is the final part of the Master's degree programme. During this project, the student will be required to demonstrate their ability to conduct a Computer Science research project, design a solution, communicate and reflect about it.

When student and thesis advisor agree on a thesis project topic, they plan a kick-off meeting (start date of the project), here they discuss the planning, milestones of the project and the resources and facilities offered by the faculty. The student and thesis advisor/supervisor plan two formative assessment moment, where they receive feedback from their thesis advisor/supervisor using a standardized rubric.

At the end of the project, the student submits their Master's thesis, written in English, and gives an oral presentation of their work to the thesis committee, followed by a question-and-answer session.

The thesis committee assesses the dissertation and the defense based on the degree to which the study goals have been reached.

The voting members of the thesis committee determine the final grade. The grade should reflect a weighted average of the four scores above, but need not to be an exact arithmetical mean. The final mark starts from 5 up to and 10. Marks ending in .5 may also be used.

If the student shows excellence (is nominated for a 10) the chair of the thesis committee should consult the chair of the Board of Examiners, at least five working days in advance of the defense. The chair may advice to add an extra member to the thesis committee.

The justification for the marks for each of the four study goals is summarized on a form and signed by the chair of the doctoral committee. The candidate receives a short report on the assessment, either in private or in front of an audience.
