Intercultural Relations and Diversity Competence

Construction, Management, and Engineering projects are complex, innovative, multi-disciplinary, and intercultural projects developed in a dynamic environment and require engineers to competently combine engineering and organisation skills to achieve better the project expected results.

This course helps you to look at intercultural relations as a communication process between people that work together and naturally belong to multiple social groups. The course helps to develop a diversity competence to address communication differences before and after they occur.

Through role-playing games, class discussions, and a group essay, the students engage with the theory, reflect on their experience, and explore the role of inter and intra-cultural relations to develop a diversity competence that they can later apply in their professional practice.

We expect students' presence and active participation in the two workshops and the interactive lectures, as these provide input for the group essay.

Grading is based on a written test in the form of a group reflective essay that applies the TOPOI and toxic organizations analysis introduced in the course. The individual contribution to the group essay and course activities will also be part of the assessment.

In case of failure (grade below 5.8), students can hand in a group addition to the project to be awarded a maximum grade of 6.0. The deadline for the addition is in the retake exam week immediately after the course ends. We will announce in Brightspace the exact instruction for the addition.
