Project Management

This course offers a comprehensive exploration of project management principles with a specific focus on construction projects. In today’s rapidly evolving industries, projects are becoming increasingly complex due to technological advancements, ever-growing challenges, and heightened expectations for value creation. Effective project management in this environment demands not only technical proficiency but also strategic thinking.

The course equips participants with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills essential for managing construction projects successfully. Topics include foundational project management frameworks, tools, and methodologies, as well as advanced perspectives on governance, stakeholder engagement, and value delivery.

While the primary emphasis is on the construction industry, the insights and competencies developed are broadly transferable to project-based roles across various sectors. By the end of the course, students will be well-prepared to lead projects, and understand what it takes to deliver them on time, within budget, and aligned with organizational and stakeholder objectives.

The curriculum follows the competencies required to move a project through its various stages. The course provides a thorough exploration of project management processes and tasks. These include:

- Project organisation

- Management of value

- Planning tasks and control strategies

- Contracts and procurement methods

- Risk analysis and management

Formative assessment:

The feedback students receive on group assignments helps them to keep track of their level of understanding of the matter in preparation of the exam.

Summative assesment:

A number of group assignments require a pass to complete the course. There is also an individual digital exam.

The mark for the individual digital exam will be the final mark for the course, but candidates will only pass the course if they have also received a "pass" for the group assignments. The results of the group assignments and the digital exam remain valid after the end of the academic year. The two grading components do not have to be fulfilled in the same academic year; although it is recommended. A sufficient final mark (5.8 or higher) is required to pass the course. General grading rules of Delft University of Technology apply. Each academic year, two exam opportunities are offered.

All group assignments require a "pass" and the written exam requires a sufficient mark to pass the course.

The written exam will be digital, on computers provided on campus, and will be closed book.

Permitted Materials during Exam

The exam will be digital and closed book. The exam will be set-up in an exam hall with computers. Only writing materials are allowed, but they are not necessary for the exam. No electronic devices other than the computer provided in the exam hall are allowed to be used at the exam. The exam questions and all associated documents (such as a case text) will be set up in a protected online exam environment.
