CIEQ5251A replaces CIE4202 Architectural History of Buildings, the latter course being discontinued with the introduction of the new MSc Curriculum Civil Engineering in September 2022. CIEQ5251A is only intended for students from the old MSc, track Building Engineering.

To be a successful building engineer it is vital to understand the strong influence that architecture, technological innovations and structural design have on each other. A good overall design balances the various demands of different design disciplines in such a way that the demands are not only met: in the best designs the chosen design principles can strengthen each other. In no design assignment does this become more clear than in the world of adaptive reuse. As renovation, restoration and adaptive reuse are a rapidly growing market in the building industry, the purpose of this course is to combine these topics.

The course consists of a series of in-person and recorded lectures, practical research work and a written exam. The subject of the research is an existing, historic building which needs to be analysed both architecturally and structurally. Following the analysis a design for a new program and function for this existing building will be elaborated. During both phases the content of the lectures is essential.

CIEQ5251A uses material and lectures from CIEM5250. Both courses run in parallel. Please inform ir. S. Pasterkamp who teaches CIEM5250 that you are taking this subject under the code CIEQ5251A.
