Introduction to Port and Waterway Systems (3EC) This unit explains the importance of port and waterway systems in supporting waterborne supply chains at different scales and discusses performance optimization from an infrastructure perspective. The unit is organized around three themes: (1) Ports and terminals: challenges for port development, port planning, port layout, terminal development, (2) waterways: challenges for waterway development, waterway dimensions, waterway elements, ship and ship-waterway interactions, traffic management, (3) system performance: analyzing the performance of systems of ports/terminals and waterways (queueing theory).
Topics per week for Introduction to Ports and Waterways:
Week 1: General introduction to ports and waterways; Port-city interaction and Corridors
Week 2: Integral port planning and Port layouts; Planning and design of port water areas
Week 3: Queuing theory; Terminal planning and design (within port layout)
Week 4: Container terminals + Port economics and investment analysis
Week 5: Evaluation assignment, Inland Navigation
Week 6: Ship-waterway interaction, Dimensioning of waterways and waterway elements
Week 7: Environment, Lecture Wrap up and Beyond
Week 8: Q&A session
