Coastal Dynamics 1
Beschrijving
Coastal and Estuarine Systems (6EC). This unit covers: (1) the characteristics of a range of coastal systems (seas, open coasts, estuaries and tidal basins), (2) the morphodynamic behaviour of these systems (including the response to human interventions) based on the underlying hydrodynamic and sediment transport processes, and (3) typical coastal engineering problems and methods for coastal protection.
Topics per week for Coastal and Estuarine Systems (and corresponding chapter in textbook):
Week 1: Introduction (Ch1) and large-scale geographical variation of coastal systems (Ch2)
Week 2: Wind waves and tides (Ch3),
Week 3: Global wave and tidal environments (Ch4), Coastal hydrodynamics wind waves (Ch5)
Week 4: Coastal hydrodynamics wind waves (Ch5), Coastal hydrodynamics tides (Ch5),
Week 5: Sediment transport (Ch6), Cross-shore transport and profile development (Ch7)
Week 6: Cross-shore transport and profile development (Ch7), Longshore transport and coastline changes (Ch8)
Week 7: Exam questions Cross-shore and Longshore, practical Ch8, Coastal inlets and tidal basins (Ch9)
Week 8: Coastal inlets and tidal basins (Ch9), exam questions Tidal, Coastal protection (Ch10)
